How to identify the least costly source of fertilizers

24 May 2017

Source the least costly combination of ingredients for your fertilizer recommendations!

Once you have prepared fertiliser recommendations (kg/palm N, P2O5, K2O, MgO, B) it’s important to identify the least costly sources of fertilizer material to implement the recommendation.

It’s also important to estimate the yield response (i.e., the difference between the yield with and without fertilizer)

Use the TCCL Fertilizer Chooser to estimate the least costly combination of fertilizers to implement the recommendation. You can download the app for iOS or Android. Here are the eight steps (and see photos below):

  • Read the Read Me!
  • In Settings, select the measurement system (metric, imperial), the crop type (tree crop, annual crop), crop name, currency (USD, £, €), decide whether to include micronutrients, select the micronutrient, and decide whether you want to work with oxide or elemental nutrient content of fertilizers).
  • Edit the list of fertilizer materials (availability, price ($/t), nutrient content (% N, P2O5, K2O, MgO, B) in Fertilizer Materials.
  • Input the recommended fertilizer rates in Recommended Rates.
  • Include any minimum doses of particular fertilizers in Minimum Dose
  • Enter expected crop performance in Crop Performance.
  • Run Optimization and review the results.
  • Email result to yourself or a colleague (and then copy and paste the output into an Excel spreadsheet).
